General Surgical Instructions

  • Minor patients must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • If you have been given pre-operative sedatives to take at home the morning of your surgical appointment, DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF TO THE OFFICE!
  • Please advise us if you are or suspect that you might be pregnant prior to receiving any medications.
  • Do not use alcoholic beverages or any drugs that have not been discussed during your consultation for at least 24 hours before or 5 days following your surgical appointment.
  • Do not smoke the day of your surgical appointment and limit smoking as much as possible for 10 days following your surgical appointment.
  • Exercise should be restricted for 5 to 7 days following your surgical appointment. Increased blood flow from the activity may cause bleeding to increase.
  • Avoid using straws for 10 days following your surgical appointment.
  • Do not eat popcorn, potato chips or other crunchy foods for 10 days following your surgical appointment.
  • Do not plan an airplane trip or engage in scuba diving for 10 days following your surgical appointment. Pressure changes accompanying such activities may result in complications.
  • Do not play a musical instrument with your mouth for at least 7-10 days following your surgical appointment.
  • If after 5 to 7 days the pain has not subsided, please contact our office for more instructions.

Patients under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult to their surgical appointment. Full post-surgery instructions will be given to the care giver following surgery.
